It always amazes me how a simple shift from color to black and white changes the entire mood of a photo. In the color photo, my eyes are drawn to the trees, yet in the black and white version of the exact same photo, I am caught by the car lights at the end of the street.
Even beyond the simple composition shift created by this change, mood is a factor as well. For me, the black and white photo makes me feel wintery. Feelings of Christmas, sweater weather, and a fireplace and tea evening wash over me. In contrast, I get the sense of nostalgia from the color version – as if I am visiting downtown in the 1950’s.
I know for everyone it is different; our reactions to art are immensely personal. Thank you all for allowing me to share my passion with you.
What do you think? Do the differences also give you a completely different reaction to the two? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
