A Black Cat

Nikon D700 + 50mm/1.4 @ ISO 3,200, 1/30, f/2.2

“A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.”

Groucho Marx

Every day I attempt to capture my cat. My dream is to one day have a photo of her that screams, “This is the one!” One I can print and post along side her best friend’s photo (my dog’s photo which was captured by Jennifer Goodlet Photography several years ago – still my fav photo of her).

So here’s what I love and dislike about this photo:

  1. I love the texture – my antique office chair looks amazing in the photo.
  2. I love the depth of field and how it draws your attention to Osiris.
  3. I love how the light and shadows seem to play across the image.
  4. I love Osiris’s expression and the direction of her gaze.

Here’s what I dislike:

  1. Osiris is too soft – not completely in focus. Man is it had to get her to stay still long enough for me to focus.
  2. Black cats are hard to capture – I know I’m still somewhat a newbie to this digital world, but there has to be some trick to make the black not look so much like a painting. But maybe looking like a painting isn’t so bad.

This photo is my favorite I’ve taken of her to date, but I’ve got a lifetime still ahead to try.
