Chasing Light: Quickbooks

My DH says, “Math is of the devil.” Now, I know not everyone agrees with this statement, yet for me, there’s a reason I majored in English and minored in Communication Arts. Math is definately not my forte.

Which brings me to today’s rant. Since moving forward toward running a funtioning and hopefully profitable business, accounting and bookkeeping will be a requirement. It is also quickly becoming the bane of my existence.

After a lovely morning at church, and then a nice afternoon with the hubs, I come home and attempt to figure out Quickbooks. I mean, how difficult can it be – watch a few YouTube videos, read some of the FAQs on the site, enter my deposits and payments. I’ve not sold anything – yet – so how hard can creating a ledger be???

I’ll tell you how hard it is – I am on the verge of tears and ready to assume the fetal position.

DH put his hand on my laptop and told me to ask someone who is math savey. In otherwords, I need to find someone much smarter than me to figure out this software.

I had a similar discussion with friends…I love music – I play the saxaphone, piano and keys. I sing and direct; I can hear if something is in tune, out of tune, or the always beautiful dissonance. Yet, I know music is math – chords can be played by numbers, and there are thirds and halfs and 4/4 time versus cut time. Yet somehow I’ve figured out how to function in world of music successfully and all without using math. At least consciously.

The same can be said for photography – there are formulas and variants that translate into shutter speeeds and aperture settings. Yet, I have never used a mathematical formula to determine my camera settings. If I want a more creamy background, the aperture is larger, for less depth of field the apature is smaller.

I know Quickbooks and bookkeeping in general cannot be ignored, but I yield – I cannot do this alone. I need help – I need a tudor. But for now, I’m heading to bed…because, in the words of Scarlet O’Hara, “Tommorow is another day.”

Until next time…

Alicia
